Designed Life Challenge, Day 3

Color & Emotion

Writing prompts:

What color combinations do you remember from your childhood home? How do you think these early color experiences influence your current preferences?

What is the color you most like to wear? Incorporate this into a color palette – pick 5 colors that work together. If you were going to use this palette in a room in your house, which colors would go where?

What is your least favorite color? If you were forced to paint a room or a surface in your home this color, what would you pick and why?

Colors will Tell a Story

When crafting spaces, colors do more than just fill the canvas. They evoke memories, feelings, and personality. Today’s challenge takes us on a journey through childhood memories, personal preferences, and the relationship between colors and textures in design.

The Journey of my Colors

As a child in socialist Romania, color trends of the era were mostly absent from daily life. However, my grandparents’ home left an indelible mark on me with its deep blue exterior paired with dark timber accents. The organic texture of lime and clay walls, painted yearly in soft hues of green, yellow, or orange on the inside, created an ever-changing interior. These simple yet vibrant shades, combined with handmade rugs in bold reds, blues, and greens, brought life to an otherwise modest space. This harmony of earthy and bright tones continues to influence my design aesthetic, reminding me of the stories colors can tell.

Exercise: Translating Wardrobe to Interiors

My wardrobe today is dominated by practical colors—black, gray, and blue denim. I chose for their ease and neutrality. While I wouldn’t translate this directly into interior design, it’s an interesting exercise to envision a room inspired by these tones. Using AI, I didn’t achieve the most spectacular result, but that wasn’t the goal. You can see the outcome here and form your own opinion.

Color and Context

When asked about a least favorite color, I realized it’s not about disliking a specific hue but rather understanding its context. Strong, bold shades can beautifully define a focal point when paired with softer neutrals or natural materials. The interplay of colors, textures, and shapes defines the feeling of a space, creating a sense of balance and intention. For me, the essence of good design lies in capturing a mood, not just following a palette.

Reflection

Colors are deeply personal, connecting past and present in subtle yet meaningful ways. From the bold rugs of my childhood to the nuanced tones of my professional projects, the way we use colors is a reflection of our journey. What colors tell your story?
